Chapter 9 - Eskelon IV, Earth year 2306

Alice felt the ground sliding beneath her heels. With maximum effort she managed to lift her head with overstretched muscles that screamed internally, and saw Caitlin and Freya dragging her out of the big tent. There was a moment of intense pleasure as her body was carefully laid on a soft mattress then the cramps began as she relaxed. Alice’s body contorted, and her mouth opened wide as if to scream but her lungs and throat just couldn’t muster any sound. Relief came as hands tenderly rubbed at her tight muscles.

“Use this,” she heard James Kincaid’s voice close by.

“We’ve got it,” Caitlin said. “Now, go and sit down, keep away from the rest of us.”

There came a series of hugely pleasurable releases of taut muscles as something cool and soothing was rubbed into her agonised flesh. Alice closed her eyes and let her head relax back.

She must have slept as her next conscious awareness was of Freya shaking her shoulder. Alice looked up into her face as she raised slowly to prop her body up on her elbows. The sun could be seen rising again on the far horizon. So, another day of torturous captivity had passed.

“How many?” Alice croaked.

“I think you saw James kill Lee,” Freya stated. Her eyes were far away, her tone flat. “Since then, we’ve lost Odaly and Katherine.”

Alice felt a new pain in her chest. By her hazy calculations that only left ten of them alive, the alien had destroyed her ship, now it had wiped out half of her crew. It was too much, such an overwhelming loss that she had failed to prevent. She relaxed her arms and shoulders and felt her body fall flat on the mattress. With an effort, but entirely uncaring about the pain, Alice curled into a tight ball and cried.

She felt a presence in her head and braced, terrified, expecting to feel the squeeze around her middle. But it didn’t come. Instead, she sensed laughter.

‘You will be left until the very end. Your sense of purpose and personal pride are strong, they magnify the suffering when your people are inevitably lost at my whim.’

The presence departed as suddenly as it had come.

“Leave me alone,” Tyra shouted nearby. Her voice trailed off into a scream of pure terror.

Alice was thankful, if the alien was torturing another, it couldn’t get her.

‘That isn’t you.’

Alice surged up to sit erect, her back ramrod straight. There had been no warning of that voice, no pain, no internal claws. The voice was quiet and gentle, it didn’t boom and echo. Had it happened? Had she cracked?

‘No, though you are close. You cannot retaliate or prevent the Varla’s entry to your mind, but you can survive if you are strong.’

“Ha-ha,” Alice giggled. “I’m hearing voices.”

Caitlin ambled over to her with a bowl of food. “Shush, conserve your strength, eat this.”

Alice allowed Caitlin to spoon-feed her several mouthfuls before she trusted her muscles sufficiently to take the bowl and feed herself.
